Había una máquinaThere was a machine

Un breve recuento de como llegamos acá. Prometo no divagar mucho.A brief account of how we got here. I promise not to digress too much.

La historia antes que hubiese una historiaThe story before there was a story.

El año es 1990. Últimos días del año. Calor pegajoso y humedad. The year is 1990. The last days of the year. Cold and shitty Christmas time.

Fundan id Software. Crean Commander Keen in Goodbye, Galaxy!

While I was babbling incoherently and rolling around in shitty diapers (although those details could place this story just a few days ago), in a humid city in Louisiana, the most significant yet minuscule change in modern history was taking shape. A change so utterly and absurdly important that its ramifications could be compared to the publication of Dune in 1965, the invention of color television, the discovery of radio waves, the invention of the movable-type printing press in the fifteenth century. Literally, the last great event in History before the attack on the Twin Towers was two guys “borrowing” computers from their office job to make a Super Mario Bros. 3 clone for PC.

John Carmack and John Romero created the first Commander Keen. They founded id Software. They created Commander Keen in Goodbye, Galaxy! The second episode of that game is The Armageddon Machine. Ten years later, fueled by nostalgia, vBulletin forums, and an economy in crisis, I stumbled upon that game. A friend called it “the clusterfuck machine.” Twenty years after that, here we are.

Doom. That’s where you know John Carmack and John Romero from. Doom is the cursed event of the last forty years.

Someday I’ll explain why.

Piensa, no tanto. Escribe, mucho menos.

Pregúntale sobre su bicicleta o libro favorito. Y no se va a callar más.

Brought into this world against his will in 1988, Matías has spent the years since creating imaginary, defective artifacts that occupy a place that does not exist. This bestiary of images, ideas, opinions, and grievances against union leadership is just that: an antique shop of enduring and fleeting obsessions, all framed in the key of permanence.

Matías talks a lot, once you get to know him. He thinks, not so much. He writes, even less.

Ask him about his bicycle or his favorite book. And he’ll not shut up about it.
